Your Guide to Bee Lawns and Conservation Friendly Turf

Turfgrass and lawnscapes are a major part of green spaces all over the world. For centuries, they have been used for recreation and formality. These days, the perfect lawn may even indicate prowess and status among suburbanites.

Ultimately, turfgrass equals high inputs of water, fertilizer, maintenance, and mowing - all time-consuming endeavors. Vast landscapes of turfgrass fracture ecosystems while creating vast deserts of unforageable plant life leaving our pollinator friends without their natural food sources.

At Tonkadale, we aren't anti-lawn, we are pro let's do turf a better way. With several sustainable options, you can reduce inputs drastically and/or create a lawnscape fit for a queen - bee that is!

Bee Lawn Mix

The bee lawn mix follows recommendations from the University of Minnesota, combining Dutch white clover, self-heal, and creeping thyme to create a seed mixture that can transform your lawn into pollinator habitat while maintaining the function and recreation associated with a traditional lawn. The bee lawn seed mixture has been shown to support more than 60 bee species in Minnesota. Bee lawn flower seed can be overseeded into a pre-existing stand of healthy fine fescue or Kentucky bluegrass turf. Available in a 1 pound or 5 pound bags.

Native Bee Lawn Mix

The native bee lawn mix uses all native wildflowers (self heal, yaak yarrow, blue-eyed grass) to transform your home lawn into a beautiful mix of turfgrass and flowers. This seed mix is designed to reinforce the longstanding evolutionary relationships we observe in nature between pollinators and the native plants they depend on. Available in 1 pound and 5 pound bags.

Waterwise Turf Grass Options

The Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance is a program which certifies turfgrasses demonstrating significant water saving potential over conventional varieties. The waterwise grass seed we carry at Tonkadale can reduce water, mowing, and fertilizer inputs by up to 30% each season. Better for you, better for the environment. Waterwise blends are available for full sun, part sun, and dense shade. Available in 1 pound, 3 pound, and 5 pound bags. Shop low input options here!

Low Grow Fescue

The low grow fescue mixture is a combination of fine fescues that results in an attractive turf stand if mown or a functional ground cover when left unmown. Low Grow Fescue Mixture does not require high levels of management once established and has great drought tolerance adapting to most soil conditions. If left unmown, the maximum height will reach 10 - 12 inches. Available in 1 pound, 3 pound, and 5 pound bags.

Listen to the Podcast

Jessie talks with James Wolfin, an entomologist and conservation specialist with Twin Cities Seed Company. He and a team of educators created a seed mixture specifically for the benefit of bees. He is on a mission to replace traditional turfgrass with more sustainable options including native blends and water-wise turf-grass options.

In this episode, Jessie and James discuss the benefits of bee lawns, planting for pollinators, and waterwise lawns. They also highlight a new seed mix specifically selected to provide food and habitat for our at-risk native bees and pollinators. Towards the end of the episode, learn how you can BEE the change by participating in the Lawns to Legumes program - pilot program offers a combination of workshops, coaching, planting guides and cost-share funding (individual support grants) for installing pollinator-friendly native plantings in residential lawns.
