Spruce Tops & Winter Greens Care

Fresh winter greens have arrived in the greenhouse! Sweet cedar, juicy eucalyptus, and crisp pine boughs are lush & ready to liven up your space for the season! We love sprucing  up our pots with winter greens - and with proper care, your spruce top pot arrangements will last long into the new year!

Top Ten Tips

  1. Get your greens going as soon as they arrive. It's easiest and most pleasant to stuff your pots when your pots aren't frozen and when the weather is warm-ish.
  2. Fill your pots with Tonka Terra, 1 bag fills two 12" pots. This is the good stuff that holds water well and keeps greens in place.
  3. Give all your greens a fresh cut. Just like cut flowers or your Christmas tree, greens will continue to take up water until they are frozen solid.
  4. Stuff your pots full! When your pots are full, the greens will help each other stay in place and hold up to the elements that come with the long winter ahead.
  5. Keep it simple. Start with spruce tops, skirt the bottom with Norway pine, choose a complimentary green and/or leafy bundle, a few twigs or berries, and a couple of cones. Maybe a bird if you're feeling wild!
  6. Water your pots until they freeze solid. This ensures water up-take and freshness.
  7. Wilt Stop for the win! Spray all greens with Wilt Stop, a product made of natural pine resin that creates a protective coating over evergreen needles. This helps to hold moisture in and protect against sun scald, kind of like moisturizer or lip balm for your greens! Only one application is needed per season.
  8. Decorate for the season, not just the day. Wire or tie in holiday-specific items so that they can easily be removed after holiday celebrations have commenced.
  9. Stop at Tonkadale! If you don't have time to create your own pot, grab a pre-made container to "drop-in" at home. If you don't want to build one at all, talk to one of our talented designers and plan out a custom order!
  10. Add a hand-tied bow, ribbon makes everything better! If you prefer a pre-made one, come check out our bow wall! We are also happy to make custom bows with the vast selection of ribbon styles that we have available in-store.
