Pink Ice Plant

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Oscularia deltoides, more commonly know as the pink ice plant. This plant belongs to the Aizoaceae family and is native to South Africa. Ice plant is known for its geometric shaped green leaves, deltoid or triangle shaped leaves in fact, and hot pink flowers. Outdoors, this plant is grown like a ground cover and produces masses of daisy-shaped flowers and spreads indefinitely. This is a low maintenance succulent making it an interesting specimen for any plant parent.

Let’s talk about care. Like most succulents, Oscularia deltoides takes the spotlight and loves the sun. It is accustomed to hot summers and full fun. Place in the brightest spot in your home for best results. Supplement with a grow light in lower light conditions and during the darker winter months. Treat your ice plant like any other succulent when it comes to watering. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, then give them a good soak. You will need to water more in the summer months, but pull back on watering in the winter. Plant your ice plant in combination with other succulents if you like and use a sharply draining potting soil specific to cactus and succulents. We recommend the Sol Soils Cactus Coco Grit. Keep an eye out for insect pests common to succulents including mealy bugs. Check for pests weekly when watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.
