Weekly Plant Chat: Peperomia 'Pixie Lime'

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Peperomia ‘Pixie Lime’, commonly known as baby rubber plant or radiator plant.

Family of Origin

Peperomia ‘Pixie Lime’ belongs to the Piperaceae or pepper plant family along with Piper nigrum which is used worldwide in the production of black pepper corns. Surprisingly, there are no actual peppers in this plant family.

Peperomia 'Pixie Lime' is native to South and Central America and is known for its adorable lime-green foliage with dark green speckling.

Peperomia are ever so popular because there are so many to lust after and of course their ease of care - a great choice for new houseplant parents.

Plant Care

Light

Indoors, bright, indirect light is best. Peperomia do tolerate medium light too! An East facing window is practically the perfect location. The intensity of direct light should be avoided as this may cause leaf scorch. If you decide to grow peperomia outdoors for the summer, a shady spot is best.

Soil

When it's time to repot, use an all-purpose potting soil full of organic matter and micro-nutrients. We recommend Espoma's Organic Potting Mix.

Water

During active growth (spring through summer), allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry down between watering. Then, give a good soak making sure the soil is fully saturated.

Fertilizer

Fertilize in the spring and during active growth with an all-purpose fertilizer. We recommend Schultz Liquid Plant Food.

Hot Tips

As a genus of plants, peperomia are known to remove formaldehyde from surrounding air.

Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs and spider mites. Check for pests weekly when watering. Keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.

Peperomia pet safe plants!
