Weekly Plant Chat: Madagascar Palm

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Pachypodium lamerei, more commonly known as Madagascar palm.

Family of Origin

Madagascar palm belongs to the Apocynaceae or dogbane plant family along with Adenium and Milkweed and is native to the island of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa.

This plant evolved to withstand heat and drought and is known for its bulbous, spiny trunk. Long, thin leaves appear mostly at the top in circular formation and with an umbrella-like appearance.

The Madagascar palms is a great addition to any succulent of cactus collection!

Plant Care

Light

Indoors, bright light is best. South or West facing windows usually offer the best view of the sun! Bright light ensures even growth and success.

Soil

When it's time to repot, use a chunky soil with good drainage. We recommend Sol Soils Cactus Gritty Mix

Water

During active growth (spring through summer), allow soil to dry down by 50% between watering. During dormancy (late fall and winter), allow soil to dry out almost completely before giving a good soak.

Fertilizer

Fertilize in the spring when active growth resumes with a cactus specific fertilizer. We recommend Schultz Cactus Liquid Plant Food.

Hot Tips

Pachypodium will drop leaves in the winter months to accommodate dormancy.

Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs, scale, and spider mites. Check for pests weekly when watering. Keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.

Madagascar palms are toxic to our furry friends.
