Weekly Plant Chat: Gray Ghost Organ Pipe Cactus

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Steocereus pruinosus, commonly known as the Gray Ghost Organ Cactus. This cactus is known for its powdery, gray color and columnar habit. Young plants are deeply ribbed with reddish-brown spines. White and magenta flowers will eventually develop and only open at night!


Family of Origin

Cactus belong to the Cactaceae plant family which includes 127 genera and over 1,750 knonwn species. The Gray Ghost Organ Cactus is native to Mexico


Plant Care

Light

Cactus can take the heat and love abundant, bright, and direct light. Place in the sunniest window you have. South facing is best!

Soil

Cactus need to be planted in a cactus and succulent specific mix. When it's time to repot, we recommend Sol Soils Cactus Gritty Mix which provides excellent drainage and aeration for arid plants. This soil is made up of 33% organic ingredients includeing coconut husks and pine bark. 67% inorganic ingredients which include pumice, calcined clay, granite, and expanded clay.

Water

Allow your cactus to dry all the way down before giving it a good soak. You may only water your cactus once per month during the growing season and even less frequently during the winter when plants receive much less light.

Fertilizer

Fertilize with as cactus specific fertilier during active growth. Cut fertilizer routine in half in the fall and winter as your plant growth slows.

Hot Tips

Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs. Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.

Cactus are pet safe plants and non-toxic to cats and dogs.
