Weekly Plant Chat: Euphorbia lactea 'White Ghost'

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Euphorbia lactea ‘Ghost’. This plant is a cultivar of the Euphorbia lactea and is known for its striking white and green variegation and candelabra like structure. Once a hard to obtain rarity, Euphorbia Ghost is now a common sight at the greenhouse. If you'd like to add some variety to your plant collection this is a great plant to start with. Euphorbia have a reputation of being easy to care for, making it a great plant for the busy plant parents.

Family of Origin

Euphorbia belongs to the Euphorbiaceae or Spurge plant family along with Poinsettias, cassava, and pencil cactus. It is native to the tropical regions of Africa and India. Although it looks like a cactus, its care is closer to that of a succulent.

Plant Care

Light

Euphorbia need bright light for optimal growth and plant health. Place in a sunny, south facing window for best results and to avoid any etiolation (long and unhealthy growth due to the lack of light). Euphorbia do tolerate a bit less light than cactus which make them a bit more adaptable as an indoor plant.

Soil

When it's time to repot, use a sharp, well-draining potting soil. We recommend Sol Soils Cactus Gritty Mix. This mix has a unique combination of coconut husk chips, recycled forest products, pumice, calcined clay, granite, and expanded clay for optimal drainage.

Water

Allow soil to completely dry down before giving a good soak. This could look like watering only once per month. Cut back on water during the winter months as light levels decrease. Using a moisture meter can be very helpful.

Fertilizer

We recommend Schultz Liquid Cactus Plant Food. As growth slows in the winter months, fertilization is rarely needed.

Hot Tips

Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs, scale, and spider mites. Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.

Euphorbia stems are filled with latex sap that can be irritating and harmful when contact is made. Take caution with young children and pets as they are toxic.

Euphorbia are toxic to our furry friends.
