Essential Shrubs for Your Garden and Landscape
Shrubs are the backdrop of any well established garden - an excellent way to fill space, draw attention to certain areas, anchor your garden design, or even steal the show themselves. And with multi-season interest, bloom power, hardiness, and newer, more compact varieties, we are excited to spotlight some of our favorites!

Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple)
Variety: ‘Velvet Viking’
A compact, weeping maple with a lacy and delicate form. Attractive deep red foliage that turns scarlet in the fall. Bred to tolerate our Minnesota winters.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Bearberry/Kinninnick)
Variety: 'Massachusetts'
This woody evergreen has green, leathery leaves that showcase bronze fall color before greening up in the spring again. Noted for producing abundant flowers and fruits, this shrub is an extremely winter hardy, creeping groundhugger that makes an excellent groundcover. Good for erosion control. Attracts birds.

Betula costata (Dwarf Korean Birch)
Variety: 'Cinnamon Curls®'
This new cultivar of Birch has a compact habit making it the perfect choice for small landscapes or entryways. Even at a young age, its exfoliating cinnamon brown outer bark curls into long strips exposing the white inner bark. Glossy, dark green foliage in summer turns beautiful, golden yellow in fall. A hardy variety that also tolerates acidic soil.

Cornus sericea (Red Osier Red Twig Dogwood)
Variety: 'Kelsey's Dwarf'
A deciduous, compact shrub with lush green foliage and a neat, rounded shape. Bare red stems provide striking color in the winter landscape. Excellent for mass planting, foundation planting, erosion control.

Cotinus coggygria (Smoke Tree)
'Variety: 'Grace'
A deciduous, delightful composition of mixed textures with big feathery plumes and large rounded leaves. Foliage is a vibrant wine red when young, darkening to plum-red at maturity. Expect brilliant shades of orange-red fall color. An excellent shrub with artful branching for multi-season interest. Performs even in rocky, infertile soils! Excellent as a small specimen tree or privacy screen.

Hydrangea macrophylla (Bigleaf Hydrangea)
Variety: 'Eclipse®' First Editions®
The first true dark-leaf mophead hydrangea, offers season-long beauty with intense, dark purple leaves that hold their color, even in warm climates. The striking foliage, paired with gorgeous amethyst or cranberry-colored blooms, will pair perfectly with anything in the garden and are sure to make a dramatic impact. Maturing at 3-5 feet tall and wide, Eclipse® will stand out, whether used as a focal point in the garden or in decorative containers.

Rubus (Blackberry)
Variety: 'Superlicious™'
A thornless and self-pollinating blackberry shrub that produces large and tasty fruit. Berries grow on year-old canes early in the season and on first year canes in the fall, providing two crops per season! Ideal for eating fresh.

Weigela (Weigela)
Variety: 'Coco Chill™'
A compact, deciduous shrub with chocolatey, dark foliage. Bright pink flowers appear in spring to summer. Excellent for adding bold color as an accent or for a dramatic statement when planted en masse.

Symphoricarpos (Coralberry)
Variety: 'Galaxy™' First Editions®
A compact, deciduous shrub with small white flowers in spring that give way to plump white berries. In the fall, leaves drop to reveal long arching stems covered with white berries that last through winter. Use cut stems for flower arrangements. Shrubs make an ideal border or nice when planted en masses.

Spiraea (Meadowsweet)
Variety: 'Lil' Flirt'
A neat and compact shrub with rich burgundy foliage and abundant, crimson-red blooms that appear in spring. Maintains its mounded shape with little pruning. Ideal for foundation and mass plantings.
