Cereus forbesii spiralis
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about Cereus forbesii spiralis’ more commonly known as the twisted cactus or spiral cactus. This plant belongs to the Cactaceae plant family and is native to Brazil. The spiral cactus is known for its radial, spiral growth pattern. Cacti are great for busy humans because they require minimal care and maintenance.
Let’s talk about care. Like most cacti, the spiral cactus loves intense light in the home. Bright, direct light is essential for good growth, healthy development, and the full expression of unique growth habit. Plant in a sharply drained cactus specific potting soil such as Sol Soils Cactus Mix. Water every few weeks during active growth, spring and summer. Allow the soil to dry between waterings. Drastically cut back on watering during winter months as your plant's growth rate will slow.
Cacti do sometimes battle pests like mealy bug and scale, fungus gnats, and spider mites. Check your plant while watering to catch these pesky bugs before they take over. Keep a bottle of Eight Houseplant Insect Spray on hand for easy and fast treatment. The spiralis can reward you with blooms generally from June to August. Fertilize with a Cactus Liquid Fertilizer during these summer months to encourage big, beautiful blooms.
