Ask Annie- August Garden Checklist

Welcome to August, the garden’s endurance test. Heat lingers, growth slows, and plants decide whether they’re going to power through or quietly protest. This is a month for steady care, stress reduction, and planning what comes next!

Here is your August garden checklist: 

Zone 4a: Warm days, cooler nights; signs of late-summer slowdown

Zone 4b: Heat and humidity persist; drought stress is common

Zone 5a: Prolonged heat; gardens rely on consistent water and shade

• Avoid major planting during heat waves
• Start planning Fall planting and division 

• Check mulch depth, and top up spots where soil is exposed
  • Use mulch to moderate soil temperature
• Avoid cultivating dry soil too deeply 
  

• Water deeply and consistently; don’t rely on quick sprinkles
• Water early in the morning to reduce stress and evaporation
• Prioritize trees, shrubs, and new plantings
• Skip fertilizing stressed plants — recovery comes first 

• Cut back perennials that have finished blooming, or leave seed heads for the birds & to encourage self-sowing
• Check supports — late-summer storms can flatten plants

• Stay vigilant, weeds thrive in heat too
• Remove diseased leaves promptly - don’t compost them as this can further spread disease
• Monitor for bite marks from pests like Japanese Beetles

• Keep water sources clean and filled
• Let late-season bloomers like Aster, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Sedum, and Helenium shine - they’re critical food sources

• Note which plants handled peak Summer best
• Identify gaps for Fall color or structure. Check out our picks for fall color in the shade & sun
• Harvest seed heads from favorite plants
• Start thinking about fall planting!
