ZZ Zenzi
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Zenzi'. This is a short and compact cultivar of our beloved ZZ plant! ZZ Zenzi belongs to the Araceae plant family and is native to East Africa. If you are looking for a unique plant with minimal maintenance, low light tolerance, and a tidy habit, this one's for you! What makes this plant easy to care for lies beneath the soil. ZZ plants have rhizomes (a modified root) that store water during the long periods of drought they are accostomed to in their native habitat.
Let’s talk about care. As mentioned above, ZZ plants like to stay dry. Allow your soil to completely dry between waterings. Water about once per month during periods of slow growth. When it's time to water, make sure to give the soil a good soak. Re-pot using a well-drained potting soil suh as Sol Soils Houseplant Mix. This mix contains chunky perlite and other components which are great for drainage and aeration. Keep in mind, ZZ plants are slow growing and like to be root bound. Transplant tp the next size up when your plant is literally busting at the seems! ZZ plants are tolerant of most light conditions and do tolerate low light. Bright, indirect light is best for active growth and long term survival in the house. Although pests are uncommon with ZZ plants always keep an eye out for insects such as mealy bugs and spider mites weekly when watering. Keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment. ZZ Zenzi is toxic to pets.
Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Zenzi' is available at Tonkadale in 3”, 4”, and 6” pots. If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out by phone, Instagram, or email us at hello@tonkadale.com.
