Zamioculcas zamiifolia
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about Zamioculcas zamiifolia, more commonly known as ZZ plant. ZZ belongs to the Araceae plant family and is native to Eastern Africa. This is a fan favorite here at Tonkadale for its easy care, vase shaped habit, and beautiful, glossy foliage. What makes this plant easy lies beneath the soil’s surface. ZZ plants have rhizomes (a modified root) that store water during long periods of drought which they are accustomed to. In the past few years, new varieties of ZZ plants have been released including Zenzi which is compact, Raven which is dark and dreamy, and Lucky with its large, rounded leaves.
Let’s talk about care. ZZ plants like to stay dry. Allow the soil to completely dry between waterings. Water about once per month during periods of slow growth. When it's time to water, give the soil a good soak. Re-pot using a well-drained potting soil such as Sol Soils Houseplant Mix. This mix contains chunky perlite and other components which are great for drainage and aeration. Keep in mind, ZZ plants are slow growing and like to be root bound. Transplant to the next size up when your plant is literally busting at the seams! ZZ plants are tolerant of most light conditions including low light. Bright, indirect light is best for active growth and long-term survival in the house. Although pests are uncommon with ZZ plants, always keep an eye out for insects such as mealy bugs and spider mites. Scout weekly when watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment. Do keep in mind, ZZ plants are toxic to pets.
Zamioculcas zamiifolia is available at Tonkadale in 4”, 6”, 10”, and 14” pots. If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out by phone, Instagram, or email us at hello@tonkadale.com.
