Weekly Plant Chat: Wax Ivy

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Senecio macroglossus f. variegatus, more commonly known as Variegated Wax Ivy. With its waxy texture and thick leaves, this plant looks like an ivy but is actually a succulent. We love this unique succulent because of its trailing habbit and adorable yellow daisy-like flowers. Leaves are a variegated blend of vibrant green, cream, and sometimes even hints of pink.

Family of Origin

This plant belongs to belongs to the Asteraceae plant family along with asters, sunflowers, and lettuce, and is native to southern Africa, from Zimbabwe and Mozambique to eastern South Africa.

Plant Care

Light

Wax Ivy and all succulents need bright light for optimal growth and plant health. Place in a sunny, south facing window for best results and to avoid stretching. If you would like to grow your plant outdoors in the summer, be sure to harden them off slowly before exposure to full sun.

Soil

When it's time to repot, use a sharp, well-draining, cactus specific (works for succulent too!) potting soil. We recommend Sol Soils Cactus Gritty Mix. This mix has a unique combination of coconut husk chips, recycled forest products, pumice, calcined clay, granite, and expanded clay for optimal drainage.

Water

Allow soil to completly dry down before giving a good soak. Hydration events may only occur once per month! Cut back on water during the winter months as light levels decrease.

Fertilizer

Fertilize with a cactus (works for succulents too!) specific fertilizer. We recommend Schultz Liquid Cactus Plant Food. As grow slows in the winter months, fertilization may not be needed.
