Soil Refresh Tutorial

Why Refresh Soil in Winter?

Over time, potting soil breaks down and becomes compacted, making it harder for water to drain and roots to breathe. In winter, when plants are watered less often and light levels are lower, soggy or depleted soil can lead to stress. A light refresh helps maintain a healthy environment without disturbing your plant too much during its slower season.

A Simple Winter Soil Refresh Tutorial

1. Check to see if your plant needs it.
Look for signs like compacted soil, water pooling on top, or a musty smell. If the soil looks tired or dense, it’s a good candidate for a refresh.

2. Gently loosen the top layer.
Using your fingers or a small tool, carefully break up the top inch or two of soil. This helps improve airflow and allows water to soak in more evenly.

3. Add a fresh layer or new soil.
Add fresh potting mix in its place to give your plant a boost of nutrients and structure. Our new Tonka Terra Indoor Potting Mix is a great option for most indoor plants. Give your dry climate plants a fresh top layer of Sol Soil's Cactus Gritty Mix.

5. Top it off and water lightly
Add a layer of moss, sand, or rocks to the top of the soil. This helps fresh soil from spilling over the top of the pot and makes your plant look clean and fresh. Finally, give the plant a light watering to help everything settle.

Extra Tips for Winter Plant Health

  1. Skip heavy fertilizing until spring, when plants start actively growing again.
  2. Keep plants away from heat vents and cold drafts to reduce stress.
  3. Wipe dust from leaves so they can make the most of limited winter light.
  4. Add a dose of one of Sol Soil's new plant biotics to the top layer of your plant's soil.
