Weekly Plant Chat: Sansevieria Hedgehog

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Sansevieria boncellensis 'Hedgehog'. This adorable plant got its nickname for its compact growth and tight twirl of leaves that closely resembles the quills of a hedgehog. Sansevieria are commonly reerred to as snake plants and are known as one of the most easy care indoor plants available. If you are looking for a low maintenance plant that stays compact and small, Hedgehog is a great option.

Family of Origin

Sansevieria belong to the Asparagaceae plant family along with asparagus, spider plants, and plumosa fern, and are native to tropical West Africa from Nigeria east to Congo.

Plant Care

Light

Snake plants thrive in high light conditions but tolerate low light as well. This plant is a great choice for north facing windows or the center of a room, tucked away from a window. Sansevieria do well just about anywhere.

Soil

Snake plants like to be tight in their pots. When they are busting at the seems repot in a well-draining, gritty potting mix, we recommend using Sol Soils Houseplant Mix.

Water

Let soil dry out completely before giving a good soak. If you forget to water, no worries, Sansevieria can handle long periods of drought because they are able to store water in their thick, fleshy leaves.

Fertilizer

Sansevieria are very slow growing and aren't heavy feeders. Fertilize once per month in the spring and during active growth with an all-purpose fertilizer. We recommend Schultz All-Purpose Liquid Plant Food. Cut fertilizer routine in half in the fall and winter months.

Hot Tips

Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs and spider mites. Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.

Sansevieria Hedgehog is not pet safe and is toxic to our furry friends.
