Rhipsalis
Hey plant friends!
This week's feature plant is Rhipsalis sp. Commonly known as mistletoe cactus or jungle cactus. These beauties belong to the Cactaceae family and are native to Central America, the Caribbean, and northern regions of South America. If you are looking for a draping, non-spike, easy-to-care for cacti this is the one for you. There are many different types of Rhipsalis out there, which makes this such a diverse plant.
Rhipsalis love to bask in very bright, filtered sunlight in your home. Morning sun is ideal if you are giving it any direct light. Rhipsalis, like any other cacti, are going to want a well-draining cactus soil like the Espoma Cactus Mix. Let the soil dry out in-between watering. However, Rhipsalis do not like to dry out as much as other cacti do. Never let your plant sit in standing water, make sure you dump out the excess water to prevent root rot. Keep an eye out for common pests like spider mites and scale. At the first sight of insect activity, using an insecticidal soap such as Bonide’s Eight is always a great idea.
With the correct care these plants can reward you with the cutest yellowish/white blooms. Hang near a window or let it trail down your favorite shelf and you will fall in love.
We currently carry Rhipsalis at the greenhouse in 2” pots. If you have any further questions feel free to reach out to us by phone, Instagram, or email us at hello@tonkadale.com.
Happy planting!
