Weekly Plant Chat: Pink Jasmine
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about Jasminum polyanthum, more commonly known as Pink Jasmine. This plant is known for its fragrant pink flowers and trailing habit. Pink Jasmine is a great plant to grab this time of year as it’s only available seasonally - guaranteed mood boost as we wait out winter!
Family of Origin
Pink Jasmine is a member of the Oleaceae or olive plant family and is native to China and Myanmar. It lives in valleys and forests at elevations between 5,000 and 10,000 feet.
Plant Care
Light
Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid direct sun which can scorch leaves and cause early flower drop. If you’d like, grow your plant outdoors in the summer. Place in a nice shady spot for optimal growth.
Soil
When it’s time to repot, Jasmine need a well-draining potting soil rich in organic matter. We recommend Fox Farm Coco Loco Potting Mix.
Water
Water when the first few inches are dry to the tough. Make sure to not let dry out when in bloom as this will cause flowers to fade and drop. In the winter you can allow Jasmine to dry out a bit between watering but in the summer, they will want a steady watering schedule to stay moist. As always, make sure your pot has a drain hole!
Fertilizer
Fertilizing Jasmine all season long will ensure vigorous growth and repeat blooming. We recommend Miracle Grow’s Miracid.
Hot Tips
Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs and spider mites. Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.
Pink Jasmine are not pet safe plants and are toxic to cats and dogs.
