Philodendron Silver Sword

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Philodendron hastatum, commonly known as Philodendron Silver Sword. This plant belongs to Araceae or Aroid plant family and is native to Southeastern Brazil. Silver Sword is known for its striking silver foliage and climbing habit. At one time, this plant was nearly impossible to get a hold of and was sought out by rare plant collectors, but as propagation and production has caught up with demand, Silver Sword is now more commonly available and at an affordable price.

Let’s talk about care. Philodendron hastatum is great for a beginner plant parent as it is known for easy care and resilience. This plant is going to want bright, indirect light. Full sun will scorch the leaves. If you do home your indoor plants outside for the summer, place it in a shady spot. Like all aroids, this Philodendron is going to love high humidity. Misting your plant weekly will keep it happy and thriving. Watering your plant should be fairly easy as long as it is not sitting in damp soil. In the summer, water once a week. In the winter, allow soil to dry out a bit between watering. Philodendron hastatum (like other aroids) will want a nice chunky soil mix. We recommend using the Sol Soils Houseplant Mix because its ingredients aid in fast drainage. As always check weekly for pests. Watch out for the usual suspects on your Philodendron hastatum; mealy bugs, spider mites, aphids, and thrips. Keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insect Control on hand to treat as needed.

Philodendron hastatum is available in greenhouse in 4” pots. If you have additional questions feel free to reach out to us by phone, Instagram, or email us - hello@tonkadale.com.

Happy Planting!
