Philodendron Summer Glory
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about Philodendron ‘Summer Glory’. This Philodendron was bred by LariAnn Garner back in 2016 and is a hybrid of an unnamed Bob McColley Philodendron and pollen donor Philodendron gloriosum. Fun fact, LariAnn Garner is also responsible for creating Alocasia Regal Shields and is the founder and Research Director at Aroidia Research. Philodendron Summer Glory belongs to the Araceae or aroid plant family and is known for its beautifully glossy, smooth leaves that emerge orange to red in color and eventually mature to dark green, almost black. If you are a Philodendron lover, then this is a must have for your collection!
Let’s talk about care. Philodendron thrive in bright, indirect light but do tolerate a wide range of light conditions. Full sun will scorch the leaves of this beauty while a dark room will stunt growth. If you plan to grow this one outdoors for the summer, choose a nice shady spot. Summer Glory will appreciate our hot humid summers outdoors and you will see rapid and expansive growth in just a few months. When it’s time to repot, we recommend using a nice chunky potting soil such as the Sol Soils Houseplant Mix. You can also mix your own Aroid soil by combining equal parts all-purpose potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite. Then add ½ part horticultural charcoal and ½ part work castings. Philodendrons don’t like to sit in standing water so make sure your container has adequate drainage. Allow the top 3-4 inches of soil to dry before giving it a good soak. In the summer you may water up to once a week. Cut back on watering in the winter as the days grow shorter and active growth is reduced.
As we all know, when collecting plants, we sometimes deal with pest issues. Look out for mealy bugs, spider mites, and aphids. Check for pests weekly while watering, especially the undersides of leaves. Keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.
Philodendron ‘Summer Glory’ is available in 6” pots and 8” pots. If you have any further questions feel free to reach out to us by phone, Instagram, or email us at hello@tonkadale.com.
