Weekly Plant Chat: Philodendron Golden Crocodile

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Philodendron Golden Crocodile. This Philodendron is known for its vibrant yellow/green foliage and serrated leaves. Philodendrons are loved and collected for easy care making them a great houseplant for beginners!

Family of Origin

Philodendron Golden Crocodile is a part of the Araceae or Aroid plant family and is a cross between two different species - Philodendron pinnatifidum and Philodendron melinonii.

Plant Care

Light

Philodendron grow vigorously in bright, indirect or medium light. Some varieties do tolerate low light. Too much light may fade the color of Golden Crocodile or cause leaf burn.

Soil

Philodendrons are aroids, like a chunky, airy mix. When it’s time to repot, we recommend Sol Soils House Plant Chunky Mix. This mix includes perlite, pumice, coconut husks, pine bark, and more to achieve the perfect balance of aeration, drainage, and water holding capacity.

Water

Water when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Cut back on watering in the winter to avoid. Make sure your pot has ample drainage and do not allow your plant to sit in standing water for too long as this can cause rot.

Fertilizer

Fertilize with an all-purpose fertilizer. We recommend Schultz All Purpose Liquid Plant Food. As growth slows in the winter months, fertilize at half strength.

Hot Tips

Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.

In their natural habitat, Aroids love to climb on trees and branches. Provide your plant with a Moss Pole or Bamboo Stake to achieve larger foliage.

Philodendron are not pet friendly and may be toxic to our furry friends.
