Palms
🌿Hey plant friends! 🌿
This week we are talking about Palms. Palms are native to tropical and subtropical climates and belong to the Arecaceae plant family where all members are monocots meaning their seeds typically only contain one cotyledon. If you’re looking to add a more tropical feel to your home, then this is the plant for you! There are many different species of palms to choose from.
Palms love bright, indirect light in your home, keep in mind if you put yours outside for the summer it will want a partly shaded spot to prevent sun burn on the leaves. Not all Palms need shade however, and many can tolerate full sun if watered well throughout the summer. Plant palms in a nice well-draining soil such as Espoma’s Organic Potting Mix with a little added orchid bark. Having proper drainage for your Palm is essential to its health. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not saturated. Fertilize with Espoma’s Palm Tone every three months. Yellowing or browning leaves can happen, fear not. Trim them off and your plant will do just fine! With so much fine foliage, palms are susceptible to spider mite infestations. Make sure to wash leaves and treat on the regular with Bonide’s Mite X for best results.
We currently carry many different types of Palms at the greenhouse, including the metallic palm, bamboo palm, bella palm, and more. If you have any further questions feel free to reach out to us by phone, Instagram, or email us at hello@tonkadale.com.
