Weekly Plant Chat: Neoregelia Pimiento
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about Neoregelia ‘Pimiento’. This stunning bromeliad is a cross between [((N. carolinae x N. concentrica) x ‘Royal Burgundy’) x ‘Royal Burgundy’]. Yikes! That sure is a lot of crossing! Known for its intense yellow, green, and red variegated foliage, this east care statement plant is one all plant parents will love.
Family of Origin
Neoregelia are native to the tropical rain forests of South America where they grow as epiphytes (a plant that grows on another plant but is not parasitic) on trees and branches. Neoregelia belong to the Bromeliaceae plant family along with Spanish moss, pineapple, tillandsias (air plants)!
Plant Care
Light
Bromeliads require bright, indirect light indoors, if placed outside for the summer avoid direct sun as this will scorch the foliage.
Soil
When it’s time to repot, this epiphyte likes a well-drained, all-purpose potting soil with added bark and perlite. We recommend using Sol Soils Houseplant Chunky Mix. This has a great mix of coconut husks, pine bark, compost, pumice, calcined clay, and perlite.
Water
Water your plant when the soil is dry about halfway down, avoid letting water stand in the center cup as this can lead to rot.
Fertilizer
Fertilize monthly with a half-strength, all-purpose fertilizer. We like Schultz All-Purpose Liquid Plant Food. As growth slows in the winter months, fertilization may not be needed.
Hot Tips
The bracts (a modified leaf that looks like a flower) of bromeliads can be enjoyed for months. Often, tiny pink or purple flowers appear between bracts. Bromeliads can be propagated by the pups they produce.
Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs and spider mites. Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.
Neoregelia ‘Pimiento’ is non-toxic and safe for pets.
