Weekly Plant Chat: Monstera deliciosa

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Monstera deliciosa, more commonly known as split-leaf philodendron. Monstera deliciosa has gained a lot of popularity over the last few years for its easy care, amazing fenestrations (perforations in the leaves), and large leaves. In the right conditions the Monstera can grow 1-2 feet per year.

Family of Origin

Monstera deliciosa belongs to the Araceae or Aroid plant family. This is a species of flowering plant (yes flowering!) that is native to the tropical forests of southern Mexico, south to Panama. In some areas it has even become mildly invasive.

Plant Care

Light

This tropical plant loves bright, indirect light. Place in a bright window with a huge view of the sky for best results. If you plant to move your plant outdoors for the summer place in a shady spot as direct sun may burn the leaves. A summer spent outdoors is optimal for Monstera as they thrive in humidity and heat.

Soil

Monstera, like other aroids, are going to want a nice, chunky, arid mix. We recommend the Sol Soils Houseplant Mix, or simply add extra orchid bark and perlite to an all-purpose potting mix.

Water

Allow your plant to dry down 3-4 inches between watering. Increase watering in the summer as the soil will dry more quickly with longer days and added heat.

Fertilizer

Fertilize weekly during periods of active growth with an all-purpose fertilizer such as Schultz All-Purpose Liquid Fertilizer. As growth slows in the winter months, fertilization may not be needed.

Hot Tips

Watch out for mealy bugs and spider mites. They love to hide in the stalks of the plant and on the undersides of the leaves. Scout for pests every time you water and keep Bonide's Insecticidal Super Soap on hand to treat as needed.

Monstera like to climb. Plant with a moss pole or other support.

Monstera can be toxic to our furry friends and is not considered a pet safe plant.
