Houseplants absorb light and emit joy into every space they enter. And while there aren't really any plants that thrive in low light, there are several that tolerate low light. Here are 5 of our favorite selections for low light situations.

Sansevieria

More commonly referred to as snake plant, the highly structural growth habit of Sansevieria complements any living space and is incredibly easy to grow and care for. Water when soil is dry throughout, about once a month. Sansevieria like to be pot bound, so until they are practically busting out of their container they do not need to be replanted.

ZZ Plant

ZZ is easy! The ZZ plant has thick, upright stems with glossy, alternating, dark green leaves. Just like the snake plant, it tolerates drying out. Water about once per month on the same schedule as Sansevieria.

Bird's Nest Fern

Birds Nest Ferns aren't as fussy their frondy friends. Water 6" plants every 7-10 days. Check smaller plants weekly for watering. Bonus! Bird's Nest Ferns are also a pet safe plant.

Pothos, Trailing Philodendron & Scindapsus

Pothos, trailing Philodendrons, and Scindapsus are known for their gorgeous heart-shaped leaves. This group of plants prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates low light conditions quite well. Water when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Trim and prune to keep a shapley appearance.

Spider Plant

The distinctive, slow-growing plant has a bulbous base called a caudex which can store a massive amount of water. Funky foliage resembling a ponytail gives this plant its common name. Water when mostly dry. Place in bright, indirect to medium light.

Staghorn Fern

This group of ferns is known for their flat, plate-like foliage. Their shield-like fronds act as a protector of the plant’s roots. Staghorn ferns are often grown as a mount but can also grow in soil. Place in bright, indirect light, an east facing windows is great. Water or soak at the sink every 7-10 days.

This group of plants is the perfect place to start a collection. Peperomia are available in a variety of leaf shapes and colors and are all fairly compact. Water when half dry. Place in medium to bright light.

Bromeliads are epiphytes and native to warm climates where they can be found growing on trees, rocks, and other hosts. Bromeliads collect water in nature by way of their cupped leaves. In containers, it’s best to water the soil to avoid rot. Place in medium light, but tolerant of low light too.
