Weekly Plant Chat: Homalomena Camouflage
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about Homalomena wallisii ‘Camouflage’. This plant is known for its beautiful green variegated leaves resembling, you guessed it, camouflage! Homalomena are compact, upright growers, and easy to care for aroids. Homalomena leaves are quite fragrant and are even used for a variety of medicinal purposes!
Family of Origin
Homalomena ‘Camouflage’ are native to Southeast Asia and belong to the Araceae, or Aroid plant family along with some of our favorites including philodendron, alocasia, and aglaonema to name a few.
Plant Care
Light
Homalomena need bright, indirect light for optimal growth and leaf coloration. Morning sun, or an east facing window is best, with dappled light in the afternoon.
Soil
Since homalomena are aroids, they like a chunky, airy mix. We recommend using, we recommend using Sol Soils House Plant Chunky Mix. This mix includes perlite, pumice, coconut husks, pine bark, and more to achieve the perfect balance of aeration, drainage, and water holding capacity. You can also create your own custom Aroid mix by combining 1 part All Purpose Potting Mix, 1 part Orchid Bark, 1 part Perlite, 1/2 part Charcoal, and 1/2 part Worm Castings.
Water
Allow the top 2"-3" of soil to dry down before giving a good soak. Homalomena tend to be quite dramatic when they are thirsty; leaves will droop as a reult. Give it a good soak and the leaves will perk right up.
Fertilizer
Fertilize with an all purpose fertilizer. We recommend Schultz All Purpose Liquid Plant Food. As growth slows in the winter months, fertilize at half strength.
Hot Tips
Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs and spider mites. Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.
Homalomena require warm temperatures indoors, avoid placing near air vents or drafty windows.
Homalomena is toxic to cats and dogs.
