Weekly Plant Chat: Fiddle Leaf Fig
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about a fan favorite, Ficus lyrata, more commonly known as Fiddle Leaf Fig. FLFs are known to be a bit finicky, but with the correct care they will fiddle-leaf-flourish in your home! Who can resist the best looking plant in the greenhouse?!
Family of Origin
Fiddle Leaf Fig belong to the Moraceae or fig plant family and are native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa, specifically in countries like Cameroon, Ghana, and Sierra Leone.
Plant Care
Light
Ficus like bright to bright, indirect light. Place directly in a southern or western facing window. Rotate your plant each time you water to achieve even growth all the way around.
Soil
A well-draining potting mix is a must. When it’s time to repot, we recommend Fox Farms Coco Loco Potting Mix.
Water
Water when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Under-watering causes older leaves to yellow and drop while over-watering causes mature leaves to brown - first at the edges and then all the way through. An even watering schedule is ideal.
Fertilizer
Fertilize weekly during periods of active growth with an all-purpose fertilizer such as Schultz All-Purpose Liquid Fertilizer.
Hot Tips
Dust and shine leaves monthly to allow for maximum photosynthetic activity and to know down and pest populations before they take hold.
Fiddle Leaf Figs are toxic to our furry friends and are not a pet friendly plant.
