Hey Plant Friends!

This week we talking about Ficus altissima, commonly known as the lofty fig. This plant is native to Southeastern Asia and belongs to the Moraceae family which also boasts members such as the mulberry and Osage orange. Ficus altissima can grow upwards of six feet tall indoors making a great tree for your space. In its native habitat, Ficus altissima can grow up to 100 feet - whoa! Known for itd brightly colored leaves, this popular floor plant will surely light up your space. Ficus are # 7 on the list of top 10 air purifying plants. This tropical plant so having it outside for the summer will help it burst with new growth.

Let’s talk about care. Ficus altissima are going to thrive in a bright, indirect light. Direct sun may scorch the leaves in certain situations. Let your Ficus dry out about halfway through before giving it a good soak. In the summer you may need to increase your watering as the days grow warmer and longer. Like most plants Ficus altissima will not want to sit in soggy soil. We would recommend using the Espoma All Purpose Organic Potting Mix with added Perlite when transplanting. Common pests to watch out for when caring for your Ficus are mealy bugs and spider mites. It’s a good idea to keep Bonide's Insecticidal Super Soap on hand and treat as needed. Check your plant for pests while you are watering and make sure to wipe the leaves clean to avoid infestations or dust build up about once per month.
