Weekly Plant Chat: Ficus Tineke

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Ficus elastica 'Tineke', commonly known as variegated rubber tree or rubber plant. This specific cultivar is prized for its beautiful green and white variegated foliage showcasing accents of pinky peach on new growth. Rubber plants are known for their easy care and sculptural structure.

Family of Origin

Ficus ‘Tineke’ belongs to the Moraceae or Mulberry plant family along with fiddle leaf figs and is native to warm jungle climates such as Southeast Asia, particularly India, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Plant Care

Light

Rubber trees prefer bright, filtered light and can handle some direct sun. Morning or Eastern sun is best with filtered light throughout the day. Ample light will promote compact growth and prevent your plant from stretching to the light.

Soil

Repot using Espoma’s All Purpose Organic Potting Mix with added perlite for the adequate drainage.

Water

Allow soil to dry to dry down several inches before giving a good soak. Never allow soil to dry out all the way as this will cause leaf drop.

Fertilizer

Fertilize with an all purpose fertilizer. We recommend Schultz All Purpose Liquid Plant Food. As growth slows in the winter months, fertilize at half strength.

Hot Tips

Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs, scale, and spider mites. Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment

Wipe leaves with a soft cloth to keep them dust free. We the Wild's Leaf Cleaning Gloves make this a simple task!
