Weekly Plant Chat: Ficus Alii

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Ficus maclellandii ‘Alii’, more commonly known as Ficus Alii. This plant is known for its dramatic, draping, strappy, green foliage closely resembling the iconic Truffula Tree! If you are looking for a large floor plant; Ficus Alii will add charm and interest. Ficus can be a little tricky, but with the correct care and the perfect spot, they will thrive and grow quite large!

Family of Origin

Ficus Alii belong to the Moraceae plant family along with mulberry and figs and is native to southeastern Asia, India, and China.

Plant Care

Light

Ficus like bright, indirect light indoors. Low light levels indoors will cause leaves to drop. Outdoors, grow in indirect light to avoid leaf burn.

Soil

Plant in a well-draining all-purpose potting mix rich with organic matter. We like Espoma’s Organic Potting Mix – a great for holding a bit of moisture but also providing adequate drainage.

Water

Water when the 3”- 4” inches of soil are dry. Under-watering will cause new leaves to drop while over-watering causes mature leaves to brown; first at the edges. A consistent and even watering schedule is ideal.

Fertilizer

Fertilize with an all purpose fertilizer. We recommend Schultz All Purpose Liquid Plant Food. As growth slows in the winter months, fertilize at half strength.

Hot Tips

Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealy bugs, spider mites, and scale. Check for pests weekly while watering and keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.

Ficus don’t like to be moved and may drop leaves as a stress response. Give your plant time to recover and acclimate as it becomes accustomed to its new location. Keep away from any heating or cooling vents and drafty windows as this can cause undue stress.

Ficus Alii is toxic to cats and dogs.
