Festive Finishes to Up Your Wrapping Game

The holidays are the perfect time to get creative, and adding a personal touch to every gift you give is an excellent way to do this. Thinking outside the box and adding a little bit of flare can make your presents just as delightful on the outside as they are on the inside.

There are endless ways to incorporate natural elements into your gift wrapping. The process is easy to customize- simply use zip-ties or floral wire to attach embellishments, and cover up the mechanics with ribbon or a bow. For some quick tips on wrapping and bow-tying, check out our video here!

Natural Garnish

  • Base Layer: Wrap presents with paper grocery bags, newspaper, or brown kraft paper. If you'd like, you can doodle a design on the paper if it feels too plain. Bonus: they're perfectly recyclable! Use a thin, velvety ribbon to dress it up a bit -maroon is a great color to compliment all of these options.
    •
  • Greenery:
    • Classic - Silver fir (lays nice and flat!), Shore & Norway Pine, Spruce
        • You can even take a clipping from the back of your Christmas Tree!
    • Fragrant - Lavender, Rosemary, Incense Cedar, Eucalyptus
    • Unique texture - Seeded Eucalyptus, Oregonia (variegated boxwood), Magnolia, Berried Juniper, Carolina Sapphire

  • Woodsy Embellishments:
    • Pinecones - Grab 8-12" of floral wire and two pinecones. Wrap one end of the floral wire around the base/first layer of a pinecone, and do the same on the opposite end of your wire to the second cone. Twist wire to tighten, and wrap around your ribbon as you tie it around your package.
    • Twigs - Curly Willow, Red Dogwood, any tree or shrub in your yard! Snip a ~6" sprig or two with pretty branching, or wrap twine around a handful of straight sprigs and attach to your ribbon.
    • Berries - Crabapple, viburnum, and winterberry all offer gorgeous bright clusters of berries that stay vibrant throughout our Minnesota winters. Snip off a clump and attach to your ribbon!
  • Dried Citrus: slice oranges, grapefruits, or other citrus as thinly as possible (1/4" or less). Lay the slices out on a baking sheet, blot them dry with a towel, and bake at 250F until fully dehydrated (~3 hours). Be sure to flip them every so often to assure an even bake! Once done, poke a hole in the top of a slice with a toothpick & thread a piece of twine or ribbon through. Then, attach to your gift!

Faux Adornments

If you prefer a more glitzy present or just aren't in the mood to forage in the snow, there are plenty of options for you too!

  • Elaborate Bows: We have quite a few tutorials available to bump up your bows! Check out the tonkadale bow, coquette bow, and mega XL bow videos on Instagram.
    • Layer different patterns of ribbon on top of eachother for added depth.
      •
  • Silks & Sprays: Snip off a ~6" piece of a faux berry stem and attach to your ribbon. The best part? A single spray can provide embellishments for 3-4 presents depending on how many branches it has! Mix and match a couple of different sprays- e.g. pink berries and gold pine to add more visual interest.

  • Ornaments: Flatter ornaments work best, but chunkier baubles and funky shapes work well too. Attach these to your ribbon with a zip tie and tie them in for extra security if they're fragile!
