Weekly Plant Chat: Cinnamon Tree
Hey Plant Friends!
This week we are talking about Cinnamomum verum, more commonly known as the Canela Cinnamon tree. Yes, you heard that right, where cinnamon comes from! Cinnamon trees are not only known for flavoring foods we love but are also known for their beautiful glossy-green, oval leaves, truly a statement piece in any home.
Family of Origin
The Cinnamon Tree plant belongs to the Lauraceae or Laurel plant family. Many plants in this family contain high concentrations of essential oils, some of which are valued for spices and perfumes. Cinnamon Tree is native to Sri Lanka. Cinnamon originates from the inner bark of this coveted tree.
Plant Care
Light
Indoors, Cinnamon Trees thrive in bright light, direct sun is even preferred. If you plan to put your tree outside for the summer, direct morning sun with dappled light or shade throughout the day is great.
Soil
Plant in all-purpose potting soil like Coco Loco. This mix is great for indoor or outdoor use and has great drainage.
Water
Water when the top 3-4 inches of soil is dry. Always make sure your pot has adequate drainage and never allow your plant to sit in standing water as this can cause root rot.
Fertilizer
Fertilize weekly during periods of active growth with an all-purpose fertilizer such as Schultz All-Purpose Liquid Fertilizer.
Hot Tips
Cinnamon plants like a relatively humid climate and may brown around the edges if the air is too dry. Indoors, place near a humidifier or group them with other humidity-loving plants.
Cinnamon plants are toxic to our furry friends and are not pet friendly.
