Calathea orbifolia

Hey Plant Friends!

This week we are talking about Calathea orbifolia which is more correctly known as Geoppertia orbifolia. This plant belongs to the Marantaceae, or Prayer Plant family and is native to Bolivia. Calathea orbifolia are known for their large, round, green and silver striped leaves. This plant can be a bit tricky, but with the proper care it will become your favorite houseplant. Bonus, this plant and all marantas are pet freindly!

Let’s talk about care. All calathea require H-U-M-I-D-I-T-Y. Mist your calathea plants daily for best results. A Continuous Spray Bottle really does the trick! Calathea orbifolia need bright, diffused light. Direct sun will cause leaf scortch. Calathea orbifolia is a fast growing variety; rotate your plant weekly to ensure even growth. Calathea orbifolia is quite picky when it comes to soil. We recommend Espoma's African Violet Organic Potting Mix as calathea need a soil that is slightly acidic.

Watering correctly is another key to the success. Make sure your pot has a draiage hole, and only water once the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry to the touch. When you water Calathea orbifolia give it a good soak. Calathea have sensitive roots that do not tolerate being waterlogged. Additionally, extra minerals in your water can cause brown, crisp edges. Use distilled or filetered water if possible. Fertilize with Schultz All Purpose Plant Food at half strength once per month during the growing season. Keep an eye out for insect pests including mealy bugs and spider mites. Check for pests weekly when watering. Keep a bottle of Bonide’s Insecticidal Soap on hand for easy treatment.
