Weekly Plant Chat: Ctenanthe burle-marxii Hey Plant Friends! This week we are talking about Ctenanthe burle-marxii, more commonly known as Fish Bone Prayer Plant. Ctenanthe belong to the Marantaceae plant family along with Maranta and Calathea. Ctenanthe is native to Brazil. This beautiful plant is known for its light green leaves with tiger-like, dark-green stripes. Its scientific name recognizes the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx who was one of the first people to call for the conservation of Brazil’s rainforests. Philodendron burle-marxii is another plant named in his honor. Ctenanthe thrives in medium to indirect, bright light. Avoid direct sun as this can cause leaf scorch leaving brown crispy spots. Bright light can also cause this plant to dry out too quickly which can lead to its demise. When its time to repot, we recommend using a soil that is well draining but with a good balance or moisture retention - Espoma's All Purpose Organic Potting Mix. Check your plant weekly for watering and give it a good soak when the first 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Never let this plant dry all the way down. Never allow it to sit in standing water as this can lead to root rot. Fertilize in the spring and with active growth with an all-purpose fertilizer. We recommend Schultz All-Purpose Liquid Plant Food.
