Tonkadale has been sponsoring Grow and Give Gardens for the past five years. We grow the plants and supply the seeds for free to all who wish to participate. The only requirement is that the gardens donate their produce to the ICA Food Shelf in Minnetonka.
This program was started to encourage beginner and home gardeners to simply, garden. The program has since evolved to support larger community gardens in our area. Over the years, thousands of pounds of produce have been donated to the food shelf. What a great way to provide fresh and nutritious food to those who need it!
A huge Thank You to the community gardens, churches, schools and those with a passion for gardening who participated this season. The need is great and the need is ongoing.
The ICA Food Shelf continues to take donations of fresh produce long into the fall and will even take donations of store-bought produce. Check out the ICA website to learn more about what they are doing in the community, to volunteer and to donate.
If you are interested in participating in next year’s Grow and Give, take some time to plan your garden, visit our website and fill out the request form at the bottom of the page. The most common plants that we provide include tomatoes, peppers and squash. We are happy to donate others such as kale, broccoli, eggplants, etc. Carrots, peas, beans and beets are best started directly in the garden from seed, and we are happy to donate seed packages as well.
If you need help with the planning process or aren’t sure what to grow, email us: firstname.lastname@example.org. We are always happy to help with garden planning, layout and plant selections.
