Tonkadale Greenhouse is excited to present its first-ever Pollinator Day! It’s scheduled for Sunday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tonkadale Greenhouse Pollinator Day July 17: Bee on orange flowerOur featured speaker will be Heather Holm, a local expert on native pollinators and plants. From 11 a.m. to noon, she will discuss Gardening for Bees and Butterflies. You can learn about pollinator life cycles, where and when they nest, how they forage and seek shelter, and find food in our landscapes. She will also talk about native plants specific to pollinators and their habitats.

You’ll be able to purchase Heather’s book, Pollinators of Native Plants, and she will gladly sign your copy, too.

Our favorite children’s librarian, Kia V. of the Wayzata Library, will have Pollinator Storytime from 10:30 to 11 a.m. This interactive, pollinator-themed, story time will include stories, songs and movement!

Throughout the day, pollinator-friendly plants will be 20% off. We’ll have honey-themed refreshments, too. And if you’re here over the lunch hour, Jake’s Street Grille Food Truck will be serving lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Jake’s has created a dish that highlights honey just for us! The menu includes Mini Honey BBQ pulled pork sandwiches served with coleslaw and fries.

Activites that will run throughout the day include:

  • Color your Commitment: Take the Pollinator Pledge. Display your pledge on our pollinator wall.  Take a selfie, and share your commitment!
  • Tonkadale Greenhouse Pollinator Day July 17: Monarch on butterfly plantPollinator Habitats: Easy, hands-on projects you can do at home to create pollinator habitats in your own yard.
  • Plan It, Plant It: Gather information to plan, plant and execute your pollinator-friendly garden.

We’ll also have educational programs and exhibits from noon to 2 p.m. from Pollinate MN, Bell Museum and Humming for Bees. Cheryl, a good friend of monarchs, and our “Butterfly Bill” will discuss monarchs’ life cycle, how to promote their well-being, and protect them from predators.
